Need guidance about how to strategically navigate UK Boarding School fees as an international family? Options available include a) reducing the time a child attends by sending them for a one year GCSE programme, Sixth Form and/or a one year Foundation Programme b) Scholarships and c) State rather than Private Boarding Schools.

We’ve no doubt that you’ve already put a lot of thought into this. Many international parents plan long-term when it comes to financing a first-class British education for their children. But, additionally, it’s about timing. Parents factor in the maturity of a child, their preference for a child being schooled closer to home and therefore being immersed in their own culture, language and religion for longer, or, considering the length of residency in the UK before the next step of UK University.

So, it’s investing in your child’s education at a time that works for your child and your family. Also, it’s a significant financial commitment and never more so since fees rose when UK boarding services became subject to VAT from 1 January 2025. Let’s be clear on this, the rise in school fees has not only impacted parents but the schools themselves. The UK Boarding School landscape, however, has been reshaping itself accordingly and there have been many positives from it.

How UK Boarding Schools have brilliantly diversified since the introduction of VAT on fees

There’ve been mergers, branch expansions, partnerships and trust models; along with new schools appearing and more schools setting up fantastic language centres and summer schools. UK Boarding Schools are adapting with aplomb, in order to continue the provision of exemplary education to as many young people as possible. Each school still has retained its own style of teaching and values, unique to them; it’s just the funding structure that underpins UK Boarding School that has changed. Examples as below.

Alleyn’s school in Dulwich has now expanded into Regents Park and Hampstead in partnership with Cognita, a global education group that owns and operates a network of over 100 Private Schools across 17 countries. Under the two educational groups, the SIAS Education Group and Anglo Independence School, St Michael’s College in Worcestershire (that had closed during the pandemic) has been given the opportunity to reopen as St Michael Abbey School last September. It’s an independent Co-ed, International Boarding School for students aged 13 to 19 offering GCSEs, A-levels and a University Foundation Programme.

King’s School in Canterbury is now running an exciting new International Summer school Programme, offering students aged 8-17 an immersive two-week programme where they can enhance their English language skills along with developing their knowledge of specific subjects from top academic experts; complemented by a range of leisure activities and sports. Additionally, King’s has a Global Studies Summer School kicking off in 2026, for students with a higher English level. It will focus on developing critical thinking skills through activities such as debating sustainability, politics and international relations.

Viable options for Navigating UK Boarding School Finance

We begin with three solid options for reducing the time your child attends a UK Boarding School by sending them for a one year GCSE programme, Sixth Form and/or for a University Foundation Programme.

A one year GCSE programme enables children to improve their English, integrate into English culture and take a reduced number of (five or six) GCSEs. The reasons that international families choose this route include their child being too young for A level/IB/Foundation, they need more help with English language or they’ve had to move schools during their GCSE course and need time to catch up. It’s a great segway into the two years of Sixth Form for A level, IB or Foundation Programme.

Wycliffe College offers a highly regarded one year GCSE programme (also known as the Pre-A Level Development Year) with a third of Senior and Prep School student being international. Cultural diversity is an important part of the Wycliffe experience and crucial to children becoming true global citizens. Alongside GCSEs (or IGSCEs) that the students take, are also some non-examined subjects. Best of all, students are integrated into the extracurricular and pastoral life of the whole community. They can get involved in activities such as sport, music, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme with other students from across the school.

Sending your children to a UK Boarding School for the Sixth Form only (from 16 – 18) means that they would be educated by the best education system in the world at a critical point in their school lives. An even smarter move, and to maximise the length of time your child has access to this level of education, you could first start them at an International Feeder School local to where you live (often British-curriculum schools). International Feeder Schools will have a curriculum that’s geared around internationally recognised qualifications such as IGCSEs and A levels. Your child could then transfer to a UK Boarding School when they reach sixth form age, thus reducing the overall total cost – especially if it’s possible for your child to live at home during this time.

There is then the option for your child to undertake a Foundation Programme at a UK Boarding School. Students can choose to take either a Foundation for 1 year or A Levels over 6 terms (2 years). Families choosing the Foundation route do so because it means 1 year of fees before university instead of 2. Some schools offer 5 term A Levels which brings the overall cost down too.

Essentially, a Foundation is taken to bridge the gap by covering necessary subjects, and English language support where needed, to gain the recognized UK-equivalent qualifications e.g A level or IB to be able to go straight into the first year of an Undergraduate Course. On each University’s website under each subject, there is a list of countries and qualifications so students can understand whether the University will accept their local qualifications to go straight into the first year of an Undergraduate Course or not. And it can be an opportunity for your child to attend a UK Boarding School in order to complete it. The benefit of attending a Foundation Programme at a UK Boarding School is that the children are in a safe and protective environment and have access to all the extra-curricular activities that a boarding school offers. There are only a small number of boarding schools that offer a Foundation Programme however. More can be found at Sixth Form Colleges and on University Campuses.

Examples of UK Boarding Schools that offer Foundation Programmes include Taunton School (for 17 – 18s) and DLD college London (for 17 – 21s). There are many pathways available including advanced mathematics and economics, art & design, biomedical science, business and economics, computer science and mathematics, engineering and computing, design technology, psychology, environmental science, sports science, fashion management and law and social sciences.

Scholarship explained for international students

Moving onto scholarships. Just where do scholarships fit into navigating UK Boarding School finance strategically? There is a common misconception that scholarships are just about reducing school fees. And yes, depending on the school, they can cover 5 – 10%. However, scholarships are more about prestige, enrichment and extra opportunities. As Which School Advisor says “A scholarship is recognition of brilliance.” Scholars typically have access to mentorship, specialist sports coaching or one-to-one music tuition, lectures, masterclasses, and enrichment programmes.

UK Boarding Schools offer academic, music, sports and drama scholarships. But winning a scholarship as an international student is highly competitive – especially with academic subjects. It’s important to make sure a child excels in one or more of these areas to make them a stronger candidate for a scholarship, so we advise building a strong profile before your child comes to the UK. Improve their chances of winning a scholarship by ensuring they’re actively getting involved activities and practising their passion and/or academic strength to a high level outside of lesson time. For example, with talented budding musicians, encourage them to play in orchestras and participate in choirs. This should be backed up by exceptional exam results. At Winchester College, Grade 6 is the expectation for 13+ and Grade 8+ for 16+.

One thing to mention however, scholars are often the busiest students in the school. For example they have extra responsibilities such as supporting events, mentoring younger pupils and being active in national competitions or high-profile performances. Therefore, careful assessment needs to be made as to whether your child would truly thrive as a scholar or if the extra demands could become too overwhelming.

Note that although bursaries are also available alongside scholarships, UK Boarding Schools usually restrict means-tested bursaries to UK residents because the funds are charitable and intended to support children in the UK.

High-quality UK education at a lower cost with state boarding

When cost is the driver, consider UK State Boarding. State Boarding offers top-tier education at a significantly lower cost than Independent UK Boarding Schools along with diverse communities and meaningful extracurricular programmes. As we always say, the right choice of UK Boarding School depends on each child’s needs, personality and strengths, whether you intend your child to go to a UK University afterwards or not – and also your budget. Panoba specialises in looking ahead to understand the goal and then advise parents on the right pathway to get there.

State Boarding Schools that we recommend to families include Cranbrook, Hockerill, Duke of Yorks Royal Military Academy and Holyport (Holyport has a partnership with Eton College). However, it’s important to note from the outset that this option is only available to British passport holders.
